Now that school is back in full swing, I’d like to focus on some items people generally don’t think about and provide a few reminders. I tried to cover the different ages, so if you’re not impacted by one, you may be by another…especially the very last portion of my blog.
Grade School Students
If you have a younger student in your house, I always encourage parents not to put your child’s name on their backpack. Why? Well, that information makes it easy for a predator to address your child by name and lure them while they’re waiting at the bus stop, waiting for you to pick them up from school, etc. To get around this issue, a good idea is to simply write your child’s name on the inside of their backpack.
High School Students
If you have a high school student who drives to school, ensure they have their updated auto insurance ID card. Additionally, it’s a good idea to check in with your insurance carrier, let them know you have a student driver with a school permit, and determine if your child needs to be added to your insurance. If so, I will tell you some good news. If your child maintains a 3.0 grade point average (GPA), you may be eligible for a discount on your auto insurance policy.
College Students
I’m going to keep the good news rolling. The 3.0 GPA also applies to college students! Additionally, if you have a child at a college that is more than 100 miles in distance and did NOT take a car with them, you could also get a discount. This would also be part of your auto insurance policy. Be sure to ask your insurance carrier. And the same rule applies here on the auto insurance ID card…make sure your child has their most up-to-date card with them!
Lastly, if you currently have homeowner’s or renter’s insurance in place, that liability may extend to your child’s home or rental unit. Just one more good reason to make a quick call to your insurance carrier to check.
All Drivers
Now this is the part that is applicable to everyone who drives. Do NOT ever pass a school bus with an arm out and red lights flashing. That is a 5-point violation, and you could lose your license. Additionally, be sure you’re on high alert in school zones. Different speed zone limits apply, and children can sometimes get distracted when crossing the street. My simple advice…slow down and always keep your eyes open!
