Do You Speak Greek?

It’s no secret fraternities and sororities are a key part of our business. We provide critical services to these organizations to help them sustain their long-term viability. But, here’s the thing — they often get a bad reputation. You see…despite the many great contributions these groups, members, and alumni provide to their campuses, communities, and each other, you don’t have to look hard or far to hear about rogue individuals who feed the stereotypes of Greek life. Heck, we can probably all name at least one movie from the last decade (or further) based on these perceptions. (I bet you’re thinking about this right now, aren’t you?)

The reality is fraternities and sororities are microcosms of our society. We don’t stop being seen by healthcare professionals because of one bad doctor. We don’t stop educating our children because of one bad teacher. We identify the perpetrators to punish them, and we work hard to learn from those experiences so we can prevent or avoid them.

Here in the Holmes Murphy Fraternal Practice, we also work to support our clients in promoting change. We understand the threats and challenges facing our fraternal clients and want to help. We’ve dedicated a significant amount of our resources to providing creative and impactful educational materials.

Holmes Murphy recently sponsored the “Greek Talks” event organized by our very own, Dr. Lori Hart. The “talks” featured seven key speakers, including Dr. Hart, who touched on some of these challenges. In case you’re curious…we have the talks on our site. If you weren’t able to attend the event, I’d encourage you, if you haven’t already, to see what you missed by clicking here!

Now, I’m not just saying to check out these videos because we were part of them. No…quite the opposite. I actually had the privilege of attending the event, and let me tell you, I walked away with my mouth dropped open. All of the speakers were dynamic and thought-provoking. Their messages were direct and addressed topics of hazing, suicide, mental health, difficult conversations, and the responsibilities of membership. The key was that their stories were relatable…real.

The messages we provide hopefully prompt meaningful discussions to influence our clients to consider collaborative, self-inspired solutions that not only help us help their insurability, but also promote safe, life-changing membership experiences. We work with some of the best people I’ve ever met. They’re all professionals who volunteer their time, talent, and treasure to the organizations that played a large role in their personal development. Change starts with each of us; every day the Fraternal Practice does our part to help our clients in doing so!

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We have a team who works hard to ensure students are able to be just that…college students…but also to understand the repercussions of decisions. We’d love to answer any questions you may have!
