Alcohol use is often discussed in fraternity and sorority life through the lenses of risk, prevention, and individual decision-making. But what can we learn when we ask alumni to look back and make meaning of those experiences years later?
Drawing from his doctoral research, Dr. Hector Cuevas will explore how Latino alumni of historically White fraternities recall and make meaning of binge drinking during their undergraduate experiences. Through their stories, the research highlights the ways belonging, cultural identity, masculinity, peer relationships, leadership, and organizational culture shaped their relationships with alcohol.
The session will move beyond simply identifying risky behaviors to consider the environments and relationships that influence them. Participants will be invited to consider what these findings mean for fraternity and sorority advising, alcohol education, prevention efforts, and organizational practices, with particular attention to creating approaches that are culturally responsive and attentive to students’ needs for belonging and connection.
