Protect Your Holiday Cheer From Hackers and Thieves

The holidays should be filled with joy, not stress from bad actors. But as online shopping and deliveries surge, so do cyber risks and real-world threats.

The holidays bring festivities, joy, and shopping sprees—but they also attract cybercriminals and opportunistic thieves. Whether you’re shopping online or running errands, staying vigilant can help you avoid becoming a victim.

Online Shopping Security

Shop on Trusted Websites

When possible, type the retailer’s web address directly into your browser instead of clicking on social media ads, email, or text links. Look for HTTPS and the padlock icon in the web address to ensure the site is secure.

Beware of Phishing Scams

Cybercriminals email or text fake shipping notifications, “too-good-to-be-true” deals, and urgent messages to trick you into clicking malicious links that can impact your personal data and even put your professional data at risk. Go directly to the store’s website versus using the link sent to you to ensure it is a safe site.

Use Strong Passwords and MFA

Create unique and complex passwords for each account and enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) wherever possible. Weak or reused passwords make it easy for attackers to compromise multiple accounts. A password manager can help create and store unique, complex passwords securely, reducing the temptation to reuse credentials.

Update Your Devices

Enable automatic updates on your phone, tablet, and computer. These updates patch vulnerabilities that attackers exploit.

Pay Smart

Use credit cards or secure payment platforms like PayPal or Apple Pay. Avoid debit cards and never save payment details on retail websites as they are prime targets for hackers. If a retailer experiences a data breach, your saved credit card details may be stolen and sold on the dark web, potentially affecting your bank account, credit score, and overall financial health.

Monitor Accounts

Set up account alerts for suspicious activity and check your statements and your credit reports regularly. Bad actors like to test with small charges before they attempt larger fraudulent charges.

Shop Smarter and Safer

Secure Your Purchases

Do not leave shopping bags visible in your car—cover them with a blanket or sheet. Lock your vehicle and park in well-lit areas.

Stay Alert

Be aware of your surroundings when loading gifts or walking to your car. Avoid distractions like talking on the phone or texting.

Porch Pirate Prevention

Track deliveries and consider secure options like lockers or requiring signatures. If possible, schedule deliveries when you are home.

Don’t Scan Unknown QR Codes

These can lead to malicious sites. Even QR codes at restaurants, on a billboard, or at the airport should be used with extreme caution or not at all.

Avoid Using Unknown USB devices

These can carry malware. If you need to charge your device in a public place, use an electrical outlet instead of a USB port as they can have malicious software loaded on the USB port designed to compromise your device and access personal information.
