The claims data from the first quarter of 2026 is in! As the Holmes Murphy Architects and Engineers (A&E) team continues to track real-time claims data, the first quarter of 2026 was the first time we’ve seen claims decrease from the previous quarter. This confirms a trend identified in our data that Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) issues continue to be the basis for most claims reported.
Our key insights are summarized below—for additional context, review our comprehensive report.
“Other Claims”
Most of our “Other” claims are subpoenas issued for a request of documents from our design firms. It’s important to report these subpoenas to receive assistance from legal counsel in responding to these subpoenas. Most Professional Liability policies offer subpoena assistance as part of the policy. When in doubt, if you receive something from an attorney, it’s best to report it!
Claims and Pre-Claims
During the 1st quarter of 2026, our clients reported a total of 25 claims and 42 matters for pre-claim assistance, averaging approximately one report per business day. Civil Engineering loss prevention (LP)/claims were down, experiencing the heaviest activity with 69% of the LPs/claims reported. Architects experienced the second highest activity with 28%.
Revenue and Size of Firms
Our large firms ($100+ million) led the way with the most claims and pre-claim assistance reports with 16 pre-claim assistance matters and eight claims reported in Q1.
Geographic Breakdown
We continue to monitor the claim reporting data by geographic region. As more data points come in, we hope to be able to provide context to which areas see more claim activity.
