Data From Design: 2025 Claims Insights

Explore what drove claims and pre‑claims in 2025, which disciplines saw the highest activity, and how firms can reduce risk.

We have a double feature this month as we examine the claims data for both the fourth quarter of 2025 and 2025 as a whole! As our Holmes Murphy Architects and Engineers (A&E) team continues to track real time claims data, Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) issues continue to lead the way as we identify new and recurring trends. For purposes of this blog, I’ve condensed the information to key insights; however, if you’d like to see our comprehensive reports for Q4 2025 and 2025 overall, choose a report below.

Claims and Pre-Claims

During the fourth quarter of 2025, clients reported 15 claims and 73 pre‑claim assistance matters, a slight increase from Q3. October was our busiest month of the year with 36 total reports, and Q4 became our highest volume quarter to date with 88 total matters. Throughout 2025, we saw a steady rise in overall reporting activity.

The end of 2025 also marks our first full year of tracking claims and pre‑claims. We recorded 261 total matters—coincidentally, there were 261 business days in 2025! Civil Engineering accounted for 48% of all reports, followed by Architecture at 36%. For the year, we logged 180 pre‑claim assistance matters and 81 claims.

Revenue and Size of Firms

The 2025 data shows that our mid-size firms ($10-$50 million in revenue) led the way with 57 pre-claim assistance matters and 27 claims reported. Our smaller firms ($2-$10 million in revenue) came in a close second with 47 pre-claim assistance matters and 29 claims reported.

Quality Control Claims

Quality control claims ranked as the top claim reported in 2025 coming in at 50%. These claims are typically based on a firm’s internal procedures in place to help ensure that projects run smoothly. The claims involve design errors and omissions during a project. The good thing about these claims is that with proper procedures in place, most of them can be prevented. It is important to have QA/QC guidelines in place and ensure that they are being followed.
