Advancing Safety: A Functional and Transformative Definition of Male Sexual Violence Against Women
Men Stopping Violence (MSV) has been engaging men to prevent violence against women since 1982. During these thirty-seven years, MSV has published articles, conducted research, and facilitated hundreds of trainings, webinars, seminars, and community forums on men’s roles and responsibilities in preventing male violence against women. MSV has been recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in their field. MSV has provided consultation, keynotes and training to 2,700 domestic violence agencies, businesses, universities, and governmental agencies including the British Home Office and the Government of Taiwan. It is from this body of experience that MSV honed its analysis and approach to engaging men in violence prevention.
Webinar Description
The line between sexual violence and consensual sexual activity is often misunderstood in our culture. As could be expected, college campuses are a primary location where conflicting messages sent to young people manifest in high rates of sexual violence. Today on college campuses, one out of every four women will be sexually assaulted. Some of these assaults are committed by predators targeting vulnerable women on campus. Many other sexual assaults are committed as a result of confusing messages about masculinity, pressure to consume alcohol and hook up, and uncertainty about effective intervention strategies.
In this webinar, Ulester Douglas and Lee Giordano will introduce webinar participants to Men Stopping Violence and our extensive experience working with men on college campuses. We’ll provide a functional definition of sexual violence that will help college fraternities and sororities create a Greek culture on campus that prevents sexual violence and facilitates safe, respectful interactions. Finally, we’ll identify practices that, when implemented, will build cultures of safety and respect among fraternity and sorority members.
