Accountant I

We are looking to add an Accountant I to join our Accounting team in Waukee, IA. This job is designed to handle assigned activities in the accounting and tax function in accordance with the objectives and procedures set forth by the management of Holmes, Murphy & Associates, Inc.

Duties:

Primary job function will be handling tax compliance responsibilities for assigned tax types. These responsibilities include:

  • Leading, developing, and supporting payroll tax process.
  • File Sales and Use tax returns, maintain accurate documentation and reconcile payments/filings to general ledger and invoices
  • Research, document and resolve tax issues and notices as they arise
  • Preparing other tax filings such as excise tax, gross receipts, franchise tax and other State and Federal filings as required

Other responsibilities may include:

  • Working with cross-functional teams to compile data and prepare reports/analysis
  • Perform a variety general accounting support tasks as needed
  • Assist with other accounting and finance projects as directed by supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • The ability to operate a computer and associated software, including Word and Excel is required.
  • High Excel proficiency is required.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and use independent judgement.
  • Ability to prioritize, manage time and meet deadlines during peak periods.
  • Ability to learn and adapt to new changes.
  • Knowledge of standard accounting principles.
  • Knowledge of federal and state tax guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to utilize calculator to perform various mathematical functions.
  • Ability to be available for work daily for a minimum of 7.75 hours per day and for overtime as necessary to perform duties.
  • Must be knowledgeable of and comply with HMA’s Client Privacy Policy, HIPAA regulations and E&O procedures and policies.

Qualifications:

  • Education: High School Diploma required; Four-year accounting degree preferred.
  • Experience: 1-2 years’ accounting experience, preferably in an insurance agency environment.
