Program Description
Our company is growing, and we acknowledge the benefit of bringing bright and energetic college students into our work environment to get them excited about career opportunities in insurance. Therefore, we created our internship program, which includes hands-on experience in many areas. The Internship Program is not just another job, nor is it intended to provide merely an educational experience for students. Our interns are given an opportunity to assess a career in the insurance industry. At the same time, our company has the chance to assess each student's potential success as an employee with Holmes Murphy & Associates.
We have invested a lot of resources in developing our internships. The Business Development Internship involves a commitment of two summers, and then an extensive training program upon graduation. Interns are not asked to sell our services, but they have the opportunity to experience the processes involved in making a sale and in delivering exceptional service to our clients.
Summer #1: Selected students will have the opportunity to experience all areas of Holmes Murphy, including Property Casualty, Employee Benefits, Captive Insurance, and Financial Services at our West Des Moines location. Interns experience first-hand how our successful brokers develop and retain client relationships. They work with our sales and support staff on all aspects of the sales process, including gathering data, completing applications, preparing proposals, meeting with clients, and negotiating with underwriters. Students will also learn about the history, structure, core values, and goals of our dynamic company through weekly HMA Intern University sessions. To make sure we are providing the optimal experience, interns keep a weekly log of their events and mentors complete evaluations for the interns throughout the summer. Interns that have successfully completed their first summer may be invited to participate in Summer #2.
Summer #2: The second summer involves a deeper level of commitment, and continuous opportunities to expand their insurance knowledge. Interns are able to experience the insurance sales process at our other locations, including Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Dallas, Texas; Omaha, Nebraska; and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. To gain an understanding of the relationship between an insurance company and an insurance brokerage like Holmes Murphy, they also spend time with the insurance companies we partner with. Weekly logs and evaluations continue, and successful students again may be invited to participate in the training program upon completion of Summer #2.
Training program: Upon graduation, the Intern may be invited to participate in a training program. Based upon the intern's desire for placement and Holmes Murphy's need, the intern will focus in on a specific area of our company. This time period will allow them to further their insurance knowledge by obtaining their insurance license and pursuing applicable designations or certifications. Their full-time career with Holmes Murphy begins.
